Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Alyxia species unidentified

These are possibly tropical Australian species collected by Dr. Leichardt.  Alyxia is a genus of about 80, mostly tropical shrubs with small, white, usually sweet-scented, five-petalled flowers resembling propellers, followed by glossy, orange or red fruits.  There are 9 species in Australia, 3 of which, Alyxia buxifolia, A. ruscifolia and A. spicata are in cultivation.  [Wrigley].  

 

Amelanchier canadensis Medik.

Deciduous tree with toothed, ovate, usually cordate, wooly leaves, to 8cm long, and drooping racemes of white flowers followed by sweet maroon-purple fruits, to 1cm across.  Gives good autumn colour.  To 10m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Amorpha fruticosa L.f.

Fully-hardy, fast-growing, spreading shrub with 30cm long leaves composed of up to 33 leaflets, and orange- or yellow-anthered, purple-blue flowers in narrow racemes in summer.  To 5m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Amorpha fruticosa L.f. var. coerulea (Lodd.) E.J.Palmer

See Amorpha fruticosa L.f.   Coerulea is a blue-flowered form from South Carolina.  [JD].  

Amorpha fruticosa L.f. var. oblongifolia E.J.Palmer

See  Amorpha fruticosa L.f. for a description of the species.   Oblongifolia is a cultivar with narrow leaves and purple flowers.  [RHSD].  

Amphiblemma cymosum (Schrad. & J.C.Wendl.) Naudin

Small tender shrub with ovate, pointed, toothed leaves and bright red flowers in terminal corymbs.  [RHSD].

Anemopaegma chamberlaynii Bureau & K.Schum.

Vigorous, tender climber with large, bright yellow, funnel-shaped or tubular flowers in axillary racemes.  [RHSD, Hortus]. 

Angophora hispida (Sm.) Blaxell

Erect to spreading Mallee or small tree with peeling greyish bark and grey-green leaves, purplish when young, heart-shaped at the base and with wavy, scalloped margins, and corymb-like cymes of 3-7 creamy-white flowers in summer.  To 8m  [RHSE, Beadle, FNSW].

Annona cherimola Mill.

A large and straggling, frost tender, evergreen shrub or small tree with lance-shaped leaves, to 10cm long, fragrant yellow flowers, spotted purple at the base inside, followed by large, edible fruit, to 10cm by 20cm.  To 7m.  

Annona glabra L.

Large half hardy shrub or tree with oblong leaves, to 15cm long, and fragrant, yellow-white flowers, marked red at the base inside, followed by edible, smooth skinned, greenish-yellow fruit, variable but usually conical, blunt-ended, to about 15cm by 9cm, with highly fragrant, peachy-orange flesh, somewhat insipid tasting.  Today grown as a root stock.  To 10m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Annona squamosa L.

Frost tender evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub or small tree with blunt, oblong leaves, to 12cm, and greenish-yellow flowers, spotted purple at the base inside, in summer, followed by edible, egg-shaped, scaly-skinned, olive-green fruit, to 10cm across, with white pulp.  To 8m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Anopterus glandulosus Labill.

Half-hardy shrub or small tree with lance-shaped, toothed, leathery leaves and terminal racemes of  white, bell-shaped flowers followed by winged seeds.  To 3m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Antidesma ghaesembilla Gaertn.

Small tree with a short trunk, curved branches, simple, alternate, oval or oblong leaves, to 8cm, velvety underneath, and axillary flower spikes bearing apetalous flowers.  To 8m.  [www.mekonginfo.org].

Aphelandra aurantiaca (Scheidw.) Lindl.

Evergreen shrub with broad ovate leaves, wavy at the margins, and large orange-scarlet flowers.  To 90cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Aphelandra pulcherrima (Jacq.) Kunth

Frost tender, rather straggling, evergreen shrub with attractive glossy, large and drooping oblong leaves and 3-sided spikes of showy scarlet flowers.  [RHSD, Hortus].
