Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Orchids

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is very clearly defined. All plants in the category belong to the family Orchidaceae, the largest family in the plant kingdom.

Aerides crispum Lindl.

Frost-tender, variable, epiphytic orchid with upright, then pendant many-flowered racemes, to 1.5m long, of large, white, rose-flushed flowers with a rose-purple lip, in summer.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Bifrenaria harrisoniae (Hook.) Reichb.f.

Frost-tender epiphytic orchid with pseudobulbs bearing 1 large, apical leaf and 1 or 2 large, long lasting, waxy, creamy-white flowers, sometimes flushed with red, with a red-purple lip, in winter or spring.  [RHSD, Pridgeon].

Bulbophyllum elisae (F.Muell.) Benth.

Mat-forming epiphyte with ovoid pseudobulbs, to 2cm in diameter, deeply furrowed with warty ridges, thin, leathery leaves, to 10cm long, and greenish flowers with reddish stripes and dark red to purple labellum.  [Jones, FNSW].

Bulbophyllum minutissimum F.Muell.

Frost-tender epiphytic orchid with creeping stems, orbicular pseudobulbs, 1-2mm in diameter, and scattered red flowers in spring.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Caladenia arenaria Fitzg.

Spider orchid, grows in well drained sandy areas, the leaves to 15cm and flower spikes to 30cm, the flowers large, cream, whitish or pale yellow, sometimes with red markings.  [Jones, FNSW].

Caladenia cucullata Fitzg.

Terrestrial orchid with a small globular tuber and single, lance-shaped leaf, and lemon-scented brown or purple flowers, white inside, in spring.  To 35cm.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Caladenia dimorpha Fitzg.

Terrestrial orchid with a small globular tuber and single, lance-shaped leaf, and large white flowers with pink or green markings, the labellum sometimes spotted with red, in spring.  To 30cm.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Caladenia filamentosa R.Br.

Terrestrial orchid with a small globular tuber and single, lance-shaped leaf, and a small terminal raceme of large crimson flowers in spring.  To 20cm.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Caladenia testacea R.Br.

Terrestrial orchid with a small globular tuber and single, lance-shaped leaf, and a small terminal raceme bearing up to 6 small white to greenish-yellow brown flowers in winter to spring.  To 20cm.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Calanthe triplicata (Willemet) Ames

Evergreen ground orchid with thick, short pseudobulbs, pleated leaves and upright inflorescence bearing pure white, crucifix-like flowers in summer.  [Jones].

Calochilus robertsonii Benth.

Terrestrial orchid with an ovoid tuber, a long, narrow, conspicuously channelled leaf, to 20cm long, and a terminal raceme of up to 8, greenish-purple flowers, the labellum covered with purple hairs, in spring.  To 35cm.  [Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Catasetum macrocarpum Rich. ex Kunth

Epiphytic orchid with oblong pseudo-bulbs, to 20cm long, plicate leaves, to 45cm long, and variable flowers, usually green to yellow, spotted with brown or purple.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Catasetum viridi-flavum Hook.

Epiphytic orchid with oblong pseudo-bulbs, to 12cm long, striate leaves, to 30cm long, and up to 12-flowered spikes of yellow-green flowers.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Cattleya forbsii Lindl.

Epiphytic orchid with two leathery leaves and a stem-like pseudo bulb, to 30cm, bearing 1-5 yellowish green flowers, to 10cm across.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Cattleya skinneri Batem.

Frost-tender epiphytic orchid with cylindrical pseudobulbs, 1 or 2 oblong leaves, to 30cm long, and many rose-purple to bright purple flowers, to 10cm across, the lips often white or cream.  To 30cm.  [RHSE, Pridgeon, Hortus, Jennings].
