Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Aristolochia macrophylla Lam.

Hardy deciduous climber with heart to kidney-shaped leaves, the flowers tubular, yellowish-green outside and purplish-brown at the mouth, in summer.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Aristolochia sempervirens L.

Frost tender evergreen climber, occasionally procumbent, with leathery, triangular leaves, to 10cm long, and solitary, funnel-shaped yellow flowers with a purple stripe and strongly curved tube, to 5cm long, in spring. To 5m.  [RHSD].

Aronia arbutifolia (L.) Medik.

Deciduous shrub with elliptical leaves, to 8cm long, corymbs of whiotish flowers followed by red fruits hanging from the bush.  There are a number of garden varieties.  It has brilliant autumn foliage.  To 2.5m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Artabotrys hexapetalus (L.f.) Bhandari

Frost tender shrub with shiny, lance-shaped leaves, to 20cm, scrambling by means of hooks on the leaves and stems, and very fragrant, sometimes paired, whitish-yellow and reddish-brown flowers in summer.  To 4m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Artemisia abrotanum L.

Fully hardy, erect, deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub with aromatic pinnatisect leaves and yellowish-grey flower heads, in dense panicles, to 30cm long, in summer.  To 1m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Asimina triloba Dun.

Fully hardy deciduous shrub or small tree with large obovate leaves, turning yellow in autumn, and cup-shaped flowers in spring, followed by edible, ovoid, bottle-shaped, yellow-brown fruit.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Asparagus medeoloides (L.f.) Thunb.

Frost tender twining sub-shrub with leathery, ovate cladophylles and small, solitary or paired greenish-white flowers followed by red berries.  To 1.5m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Asystasia scandens Hook.

Frost tender, evergreen twining plant or straggling shrub with terminal racemes of delicate, creamy white petunia-like flowers produced in abundance in racemes at the axils of every leaf.  Flowers for several months.  To 2m.  [RHSD].

Atherosperma moschatum Labill.

Frost hardy, conical, evergreen tree with lance-shaped, nutmeg-scented leaves and solitary, saucer-shaped, fragrant, creamy white flowers, produced from the upper leaf axils in early spring.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hilliers’, FNSW, Beadle].

Aucuba japonica Thunb. var. variegata

Fully hardy, rounded, evergreen shrub with elliptic to ovate glossy leaves, usually with a few marginal teeth, and small, red-purple flowers in spring.  In female plants these are followed by bright red berries in autumn.  Variegata is always female, and has yellow speckled leaves.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Bambusa arundinacea Wall.

Frost tender evergreen, clump-forming bamboo with tall woody stems, up to 20cm in diameter, with a profusion of very leafy branches at the top, flowering once only after which the plant dies.  To 30m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Barleria strigosa Willd.

Probably Roxburgh’s Barleria caerulea. Frost tender evergreen shrub with lance-shaped leaves and spikes of tubular, 2-lipped, blue flowers in summer.  To 90cm.  [Hortus].

Bauera rubioides Andr.

Frost tender, mat-forming to low, spreading, bushy, evergreen shrub with 3-palmate, deep green leaves and solitary, bowl-shaped, pink or white flowers, on long stalks from the upper leaf axils, from spring to summer.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hilliers’, Hortus, FNSW].

Bauhinia racemosa Lam.

Frost-tender shrub or small tree with hanging branches, small, lobed leaves and loose racemes of yellow flowers.  [Hortus].  

Bauhinia richardiana DC.

Frost-tender shrub with heart-shaped leaves and white flowers.  [Don].
