Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Ilex cornuta Lindl. & Paxt.

Fully hardy, dense, rounded, evergreen shrub with rectangular, glossy, dark green leaves, to 8cm long, with prominent spines, and white flowers, followed by long-lasting, large red berries, 1cm across, in autumn and winter.  To 4m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Illicium anisatum L.

Frost hardy, conical evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, lance-shaped leaves, to 12cm, and fragrant, star-shaped, yellow-green, later cream, flowers, to 2.5cm across, in spring.  To 8m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Indigofera coriacea Ait.

Frost-tender shrub with obovate leaves composed of 5 leaflets and dense heads of red or purple flowers.  To 90cm.  [Don].

Indigofera cytisoides L.

Frost-tender, erect shrub with pinnate leaves composed of 2-3 pairs of leaflets, and terminal racemes of rose-coloured flowers.  To 1.5m.  [Don].

Indigofera decora Lindl.

Frost-hardy, spreading deciduous shrub with arching branches, pinnate leaves, to 20cm long, composed of 7-13, narrow leaflets, and erect racemes, to 20cm long, of pea-like white flowers, suffused with crimson, to 2cm across, in summer.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Iochroma cyaneum (Lindl.) M.L.Green

Frost tender, erect to spreading shrub with downy shoots, softly-hairy, ovate to lance-shaped leaves, to 15cm long, and drooping umbel-like trusses of up to 20, tubular, deep purple-blue flowers, to 5cm long, in summer.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Ixora chinensis Lam.

Frost-tender, bushy, rounded shrub with oblong, pointed leaves, to 6cm long, and dense, flattened, corymb-like cymes, to 10cm across, of red, orange, pink or white flowers, in summer. To 2m by 2m.  [RHSE, Hortus].  Often confused with Ixora L. var. bandhuca (Roxb.) Corner which see.  

Ixora chinensis Lam. var. incarnata

Ixora coccinea L.

Frost-tender, bushy, gently rounded shrub with oblong, glossy, pointed leaves, to 10cm long, and corymb-like cymes, to 12cm across, of red, orange, pink or yellow flowers in summer and autumn.   To 2.5m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Ixora coccinea L. var. bandhuca (Roxb.) Corner

See Ixora coccinea L. for a basic description.  There are many garden cultivars of Ixora coccinea in a wide range of growth forms and flower colour, reflected in its common name of ‘Jungle geranium’.  ‘Bandhuca’ has compressed corymbs of scarlet flowers.  [RHSD].

See Ixora coccinea L. for a basic description.  There are many garden cultivars of Ixora coccinea in a wide range of growth forms and flower colour, reflected in its common name of ‘Jungle geranium’.  Grandiflora is described as having large red flowers.  [JD].

Ixora odorata Hook.

Tender evergreen shrub with broadly lance-shaped leaves and large panicles of very fragrant white flowers, ageing to yellow-brown, in spring.  To 90cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].
