Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Polygala myrtifolia L.

Frost tender, erect, bushy, evergreen shrub with oblong, leathery leaves and short, leafy, terminal racemes of purple-veined, greenish white flowers, to 2cm long, with crested keel petals, from spring to autumn.  To 2.5m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Polygala oppositifolia Thunb. var. cordifolia

Half hardy evergreen shrub with opposite, heart-shaped leaves and terminal racemes of purple flowers with a yellowish-green keel, in spring.  To 1m.  The leaves of cordifolia are larger and more heart-shaped than the type.  [RHSD].

Polygala oppositifolia Thunb. var. latifolia Harv.

An upright, evergreen shrub with broader, more ovate leaves than Polygala oppositifolia Thunb. var. cordifolia, which see, and freely-produced red-purple flowers in spring.  To 50cm.  [RHSD].

Polygala virgata Thunb. var. speciosa Harv.

Frost hardy erect shrub with reed-like stems, narrow leaves and purple flowers borne on conspicuous racemes, to 15cm long.  The variety speciosa has purplish flowers with spreading pedicels.  To 2m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Polyosma cunninghamii Benn.

Frost hardy small tree with opposite, elliptic leaves, to 10cm long, irregularly and coarsely toothed, and racemes of tubular flowers with spreading tips, to 1cm long, in spring and summer.  To 15m. [FNSW, Beadle].

Populus nigra L. var. italica Du Roi

Fully hardy, fast-growing, narrowly columnar, deciduous tree with triangular, glossy leaves, to 10cm long, turning yellow in autumn. Trees of this cultivar are male.  To 30m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Porphyrocoma lanceolata Hook.

Frost tender, erect, evergreen herb or sub-shrub with lance-shaped leaves and a large, cone-shaped, terminal spike of violet-purple flowers, with large, overlapping bracts, in spring.  [RHSD].

Premna integrifolia L.

Tree with ovate leaves. sometimes toothed, to 8cm long. and loose panicles of strongly scented greenish-white flowers in spring.  To 3.5m.  [RHSD].

Prestonia venosa G.Nicholson

Frost-tender, climbing or twining woody vine with oval, opposite leaves, to 15cm, and clusters of up to 20, red-veined yellow-green flowers in summer.  [RHSD].

Protea repens L.

Half hardy, erect, bushy shrub or small tree with lance-shaped leaves, to 15cm long, and goblet-shaped flowers heads, to 9cm across, uniformly cream-white or tipped with pink or red, and covered with sticky resin, in spring and summer.  To 4m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Protea rosacea L.

Half hardy, compact shrub with slender branches, linear leaves, to 24cm, occasionally flushed red, and a perpendicular inflorescence composed of brilliant rose to crimson or mahogany bracts, buff in the centre, and reddish flowers in a crowded cone, in late spring.  To 1.2m.  [RHSD].

Protea species unidentified

An unidentified species, no description.

Protea speciosa L.

Shrub with wavy, ciliate, oblong leaves to 12cm long, and ovoid, reddish flower heads, to 12cm long.  To 1.8m.  [RHSD].

Prunus armeniaca ‘Bidwill’s seedling’

A cultivar of Prunus armeniaca L. I have found no further information on this apricot. 

 

 

Prunus armeniaca ‘Breda’

A cultivar of Prunus armeniaca L. ‘Rather small, roundish, compressed on the sides, and sometimes entirely four-sided. Skin deep orange, dotted with brown spots next the sun. Suture well defined. Flesh deep orange, rich, highly flavoured, and free. Stone small, roundish, impervious on the back. Kernel sweet, with the flavour of a hazel-nut. End of August.’ [Hogg – Fruit Manual p.38/1860].
