Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Pittosporum eugenoides A.Cunn.

Large shrub or small tree with narrowly oval, undulate leaves, to 10cm long and 3cm wide, paler beneath, and terminal clusters of honey-scented yellowish flowers.  Also occurs in a variegated form.  To 13m.  [RHSD, Hilliers’, Annals of the Missouri Botanic Garden v.43, p.179/1956].

Pittosporum revolutum Ait.

Half hardy, bushy shrub with alternate, lance-shaped leaves, to 11cm long, woolly beneath, and few-flowered terminal umbels of bell-shaped yellow flowers in spring and summer, followed by spherical orange capsules.  To 4m.  [RHSE, FNSW, Beadle].

Pittosporum tenuifolium Banks & Sol. ex Gaertn. var. nigricans

Frost hardy, bushy shrub to small tree with elliptic, wavy-margined leaves, to 6cm long, and small axillary clusters of honey-scented, bell-shaped, black-red flowers in spring and summer, followed by grey-black capsules.  ‘Nigricans’ has black twigs.  To 10m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Half hardy, dense, rounded shrub or small tree with alternate, obovate leaves, to 10cm long, and large, terminal, umbel-like clusters of very scented, creamy white flowers, to 2.5cm across, in spring and summer, followed by yellow-brown capsules.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Pittosporum undulatum Vent.

Half hardy, dense, rounded tree with lance-shaped, wavy-margined leaves and terminal umbel-like clusters of fragrant, creamy white flowers in spring and summer, followed by orange-brown capsules.  To 24m.  [RHSE, Hilliers’].  

Platanus occidentalis L.

Large tree with shallowly five-lobed leaves, mottled bark, the fruit balls usually single or in pairs and smoother than most other species.  To 50m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Platanus orientalis L.

Fully hardy, vigorous, spreading, deciduous tree with flaking grey, brown and cream bark, deeply 5-lobed leaves, to 25cm long, and green, turning brown, fruit clusters persisting into winter.  To 30m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Plowmania nyctaginoides (Standl.) Hunz. & Subsils

Fully hardy, fast-growing evergreen climber with 4-angled stems, pinnate leaves, to 7cm long, and racemes of tubular orange flowers, to 2.5cm long, from spring to autumn.  To 5m or more.  [RHSE].

Plumbago capensis Thunb.

Half hardy, scandent evergreen shrub, sometimes grown as a climber, with slender branching stems, oblong leaves, to 7cm long, and dense, terminal, corymb-like racemes of long-tubed, sky-blue flowers, to 4cm long, in summer and autumn.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Plumbago capensis Thunb. var. alba

For a description of the species see Plumbago capensis Thunb.  Alba is a form with white flowers.  

Plumbago indica L.

Frost tender evergreen shrub, becoming spreading or semi-scandent, with elliptic leaves, to 11cm long, and terminal racemes of long-tubed, deep pink or red flowers, to 2.5cm long, in autumn or winter.  To 2m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Podalyria calyptrata Willd.

Half-hardy shrub with elliptic, grey-green leaves, to 5cm, and light pink to lavender-purple flowers with a white keel, to 4cm across, in spring and summer.  To 3m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Podalyria sericea R.Br.

Frost-tender spreading shrub with obovate leaves, to 2cm long, covered with silvery hairs ageing to gold, and solitary, fragrant, pea-like lavender–blue to lavender-pink flowers, to 1cm across, from autumn to spring.  To 90cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Poinciana regia Boj. ex Hook.

Frost tender, erect, widely-branching evergreen tree with 2-pinnate leaves, to 60cm long, with numerous leaflets, and loose terminal or axillary racemes of bright scarlet flowers in summer, followed by pods up to 10cm long.  To 12m.  [RHSD, Hortus].
