Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Fabaceae

A family of some 700 genera and 18000 species world-wide, trees, shrubs or herbs, sometimes spiny.  The family contains a large number of plants of economic importance, for timber, fodder, vegetable crops and for other purposes.  [FNSW].  The family is often split into 3 subfamilies: Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosaceae and Fabaceae, all represented in the Hortus by a range of trees, shrubs and herbs.  In some classification systems known as Leguminosae or Papilionaceae.
