This plant, and other unidentified Lupinus species listed in the Hortus, are probably garden cultivars or hybrids, popular for many years. Lupin species were first introduced to Europe in the 16th century. Paxton's Dictionary, under Garden varieties of Lupin, comments: ‘These are now very numerous – their colours and names are given in the nurserymen’s catalogues.’
