Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Herbaceous Plants

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is poorly defined. Annuals and perennial herbs were included here. This is retained but Annuals are also separately identified.

Rhodochiton atrosanguineum (Zucc.) Rothm.

Frost tender, slender-stemmed climber with long, pendant stalks bearing solitary, tubular, black to reddish-purple flowers with pink or mauve calyces from summer to autumn.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Ruschia maxima (Haw.) L.Bolus

Succulent shrub to 1.5m, leaves small, to 5cm long, half-moon shaped and 3-angled, flowers rose-coloured, 2cm across. [Hortus, Flowering Plants of Africa].

 

Saccharum officinarum L.

Tall grass with dark green leaves.  To 3m.  An important economic crop, the source of cane sugar.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Salpiglossis sinuata Ruiz & Pav.

Half hardy, erect annual with slender, branching stems bearing alternate, long-stalked, lance-shaped, wavy-margined leaves and broadly funnel-shaped, 5-lobed flowers in a wide variety of colours, heavily veined in a deeper or contrasting colour, from summer to autumn.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Salvia coccinea Juss. ex Murray

A quite variable, tender or Half-hardy herbaceous plant with cordate or ovate, toothed leaves, hairy beneath, and deep scarlet flowers.  To 60cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Salvia officinalis L.

Fully hardy, erect perennial sub-shrub with oblong, grey-green, woolly, aromatic leaves and terminal or axillary racemes of lilac-blue flowers.  To 80cm, spreading.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Salvia patens Cav.

Frost hardy tuberous perennial with few-flowered loose, terminal racemes of paired, deep blue flowers in midsummer to mid-autumn.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Salvia splendens Ker-Gawl.

Half hardy, erect bushy perennial, usually grown as an annual, with long-tubed bright red flowers, enclosed in red bracts, in dense terminal spikes from summer to autumn.  To 40cm or more in some older cultivars.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Saxifraga umbrosa L.

Fully hardy evergreen perennial with compact rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves and pink flowers in summer.  There are many garden varieties.  To 30cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Scabiosa atropurpurea L.

Fully hardy, erect, wiry-stemmed biennial or short-lived perennial, often grown as an annual, somewhat variable with solitary, fragrant, dark purple to lilac flower heads in summer.  To 90cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Scabiosa stellata L.

Fully hardy, erect, branching, wiry stemmed, hairy annual with pale blue to white flowers in summer, followed by large silvery-cream seed heads.  To 45cm.  The seed heads are very useful in dried flower arrangements.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Schizanthus pinnatus Ruiz & Pav.

Frost tender, erect annual with fern-like foliage and terminal, open cymes of tubular, flared, 2-lipped, white, yellow, pink, purple or red flowers with yellow, streaked or spotted throats, from spring to autumn.  To 50cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Senecio cineraria DC.

Frost hardy, mound-forming, evergreen, biennial, sub-shrub, with ovate to lance-shaped, shallowly or deeply cut, felted, silvery-grey leaves and loose corymbs of mustard yellow flowers in midsummer.  It is usually grown as an annual for its decorative foliage, often in formal bedding displays.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Silene laciniata Cav.

A tender, pubescent perennial herbaceous plant with with large, lance-shaped leaves and deep scarlet, star-like flowers.  [RHSD, Hortus, Gard. Chron 1843].
