Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Turnera ulmifolia L.

Frost tender subshrub with lance-shaped leaves, to 10cm, often serrated or crinkled, with very showy but short-lived bright yellow flowers, sometimes flushed red or maroon at the base.  To 70cm.  [RHSD].

Ulex europaeus L.

Fully hardy bushy shrub with spine-tipped green shoots, rigid, spine-like leaves, to 2.5cm long, and solitary, axillary pea-like bright yellow flowers, to 2cm long, mainly in the spring.  To 2.5m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Ulmus glabra Huds.

Fully hardy, rounded deciduous tree with obovate, toothed leaves, to 15cm long, lobed at the tips, turning yellow in autumn, and tiny red flowers in spring, followed by clustered, winged green fruit.  To 40m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’]. 

Ulmus parvifolia Jacq.

Fully hardy, spreading, deciduous or semi-evergreen tree with pendant shoots, flaking bark, marked orange brown, elliptic, toothed leaves, to 6cm long, sometimes turning colour in autumn, and tiny red flowers in summer and autumn, followed by small, winged green fruit.  To 18m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Ulmus procera Salisb.

Fully hardy, large, broadly upright, deciduous tree with ovate, toothed leaves, to 10cm long, turning yellow in autumn, and tiny red flowers in spring, followed by winged green fruit, to 1.5cm across, rarely produced.  It spreads mainly through suckers.  To 40m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Ulmus procera Salisb. var. suberosa

Fully hardy tree of low, spreading habit, with smooth, glossy leaves and branchlets with four corky wings.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Urechites suberectus Müll.Arg.

Frost-tender, evergreen, twining climber, with opposite, ovate leaves, downy beneath, with large, salver-shaped, yellow flowers, with somewhat reflexed petals, in summer.  [RHSD].

Verbena x hybrida ‘Emma’

A cultivar of Verbena x hybrida Hort. ex Vilm., the Florists’ Verbena.  ‘Dark maroon purple, a plant of fine habit, a profuse bloomer, perhaps one of the most striking varieties in cultivation. Height 1 foot.’  W. P. Ayres.  [GC Oct. 11th, 1845].

Verbena x hybrida ‘Western Rival’

A cultivar of Verbena x hybrida Hort. ex Vilm., the Florists’ Verbena.  Violet-crimson in colour.

Verbena x hybrida Smith’s ‘Eliza’

A cultivar of Verbena x hybrida Hort. ex Vilm., the Florists’ Verbena.  ‘Eliza [is an] exceedingly rich vermillion red.’  Woods [Gard. Chron. 1848].  George Smith of Islington, in an advertisement in The Gardeners Chronicle, described ‘Eliza’ (Smith) as ‘colour blush, with rosy-purple centre, eye pink, extra large truss, very attractive and fine habit.’  This appears to be a different plant.  [Gard. Chron. 1851].

Viburnum arboreum Britton

Tree with a straight trunk and spreading branches.  To 15m.  Confined to St Catherine, St James and Trelawny in woodland on limestone hills.  Listed on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. [www.iucnredlist.org].

Viburnum cassinoides L.

Hardy, rounded, bushy, deciduous shrub with leathery, toothed, ovate leaves, to 10cm long, changing to scarlet in autumn, and flat clusters of yellowish-white flowers in summer, followed by red fruits which ripen to black.  To 2.4m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Viburnum japonicum (Thunb.) Spreng.

Fully hardy, rounded, evergreen shrub with stout shoots, ovate, glossy, sparsely-toothed leaves, to 15cm long, and spherical cymes, to 10cm across, of small, tubular, fragrant white flowers in summer, followed by bright red fruit.  To 2m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Viburnum macrocephalum ‘Sterile’

A form of Viburnum macrocephalum Fortune. Frost-hardy, rounded, evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub with elliptic, toothed leaves, to 10cm long, and dense, terminal cymes, to 15cm across, of salverform white flowers in spring.  To 5m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers']. Possibly naturally occurring, although long selected in gardens,  and treated as a variety rather than a cultivar here.

Viburnum obovatum Walt.

Fully hardy, semi-evergreen shrub with shiny, glossy, ovate leaves, nearly entire, and cymes of white flowers in spring.  To 2.4m.  [Hortus, Don].
