Herbaceous Plants
A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is poorly defined. Annuals and perennial herbs were included here. This is retained but Annuals are also separately identified.
Hibiscus cannabinus L. var. lindleyi
Half-hardy, erect, almost unbranched, fast-growing annual or short-lived perennial with palm-like, 3- to7-lobed leaves, to 15cm long, and single or few-flowered axillary racemes of funnel-shaped, pale yellow or purple-red flowers with crimson-red centres, from summer to autumn. To 3.5m. The variety Lindleyi has deep purple flowers. [RHSE, Hortus].
Hibiscus moschato-speciosus [Bidwill]
Probably an Abelmoschus moschatus Medik. x Hibiscus coccineus Walter hybrid. I have found no description of this plant but it is reasonable to assume that the hybrid would share the herbaceous habit and bright red flowers of both parents, assuming moschatus to be the subspecies tuberosus. The illustration of Hibiscus coccineus given here is a possible likeness.
Hibiscus pedunculatus L.f.
Frost-tender perennial herb or sub-shrub with 3-lobed leaves and solitary, axillary, pale rose-purple or pale lilac flowers. To 2m. [RHSD, Hortus].
Hoffmania discolor (Lem.) Hemsl.
Frost-tender herbaceous perennial or sub-shrub with opposite, ovate leaves, shining green above and purple beneath, and axillary racemes, to 14cm, of small red flowers. To 2m. [RHSD, Hortus].
Iberis lagascana DC.
I have found no description of Iberis lagascana. Information given here is for Iberis carnosa. The given synonyms suggest that Iberis lagascana is a closely related species or a sub-species.
Iberis sempervirens L. var. superba
Perennial sub-shrub with narrow blunt leaves and white flowers in elongated corymbs. To 30cm. [RHSD, Hortus]. The variety superba is shorter growing and useful for edging. [Hortus].
Iberis umbellata L.
Fully hardy, bushy, mound-forming annual with abundant, small, scented, white, lavender, purple, pink or crimson flowers in spring and summer. To 30cm. [RHSE, Hortus].
Impatiens balsamina L.
Frost tender, sparsely-branched annual with cup-shaped, hooded, pink, red, purple or white flowers in summer and autumn. To 75cm. [RHSE, Hortus].
Ipomoea alba L.
Frost tender, twining perennial usually grown as an annual, with heart-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped white flowers opening at dusk in summer to autumn. To 5m. [RHSE, Hortus].
Ipomoea brownii Roem. & Schult.
No description at present.
Ipomoea cairica (L.) Sw.
Frost tender, tuberous-rooted perennial climber with palmate leaves and profuse funnel-shaped flowers in red, purple or white, with purple inside the tube. To 4.5m. [RHSD, Hortus, FNSW].
Ipomoea carnea Jacq. subsp. fistulosa (Mart. ex Choisy) D.Austin
Frost tender erect shrub with elongated lance-shaped leaves and funnel-shaped pink to pink-purple flowers, to 8cm long and 12cm in diameter in summer. To 2.5m. [RHSD, Hortus].
Ipomoea coccinea L.
Frost tender annual twining climber with entire or toothed leaves, to 14cm long, and racemes of 3-8 scarlet flowers, to 2cm across, with yellow throats, in summer. To 4m. [RHSE, Hortus].
Ipomoea coccinea L. var. luteola (Jacq.) House
Frost tender climber with heart-shaped, hairless leaves and orange-red flowers with a yellow centre. See Ipomoea coccinea L. for more details of the species.
Ipomoea hederacea Jacq.
Ipomoea caerulea splendens is probably a form of Ipomoea caerulea Roxb. ex Ker-Gawl., a synonym of Pharbitis hederacea. Annual climber with cordate, 3-lobed leaves and blue or pale purple flowers. [RHSD. Hortus]. See also Pharbitis hederacea (Jacq.) Choisy var. dillenii .
