Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Herbaceous Plants

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is poorly defined. Annuals and perennial herbs were included here. This is retained but Annuals are also separately identified.

Gentiana septemfida Pall.

Hardy perennial with lance-shaped leaves and blue flowers, narrow to wide bell-shaped, spotted white inside, in terminal clusters.  Variable with many forms.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Geranium richarsonii Fisch. & Trautv.

Woody-based perennial with deeply cut seven-lobed leaves and black-veined white flowers, to 3cm across, in early summer.  To 45cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Geum chiloense ‘Magnificum Splendens’

See Geum chiloense Balb. ex Ser. for a brief description of the species.  ‘Magnificum Splendens’ is a form, probably of garden origin, with orange-red flowers [Hortus], or deep yellow flowers [RHSD].

Geum chiloense Balb. ex Ser.

Fully hardy, clump-forming perennial with pinnate basal leaves, deeply lobed, toothed stem leaves and branched stems bearing reddish-orange or scarlet flowers, to 4cm across, in summer.  To 60cm.  The well-known cultivar ‘Mrs Bradshaw’ is a form of Geum chiloense.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Godetia bifrons Hort.

Fully hardy biennial with purple flowers with a prominent crimson blotch in the centre of the petals, in summer.  To 45cm.  [BR f.1405/1831].  Said to be a hybrid between Clarkia amoena A.Nelson & J.F.Macbr. roseo-alba, synonym Oenothera roseo-alba Bernh., and Clarkia amoena A.Nelson & J.F.Macbr. lindleyi.

Godetia grandiflora Lindl.

Stout-stemmed, bushy annual with oblong leaves and leafy raceme of satiny, saucer-shaped flowers, usually rose-coloured with a deeper cente, but in garden varieties ranging in colour from red to white.  To 30cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Helichrysum humile Less.

Shrub with slender, often unbranched shoots and terminal flower heads with pale pink to deep rose-coloured, papery bracts.  To 60cm.  [RHSD].

Helichrysum humile Less. var. grandiflorum purpurea

See Helichrysum humile Less. for a description of the type.  The variety grandiflorum is of a dwarf habit compared with the type, freely branching, the flower heads larger, and purpureum has flower heads of dark purple [RHSD].  Grandiflorum purpurea presumably combines all of these characteristics to some degree.

Helichrysum macranthum Benth. var. roseum

Helichrysum bracteatum var. macranthum has white flowers, rose coloured outside.  [RHSD].

Helichrysum robustum Paxt. var. roseum

Elichrysum robustum is a hardy annual usually with white flowers although the variety roseum has pink flowers.  [JD].

Helichrysum sesamoides Willd.

Slender erect shrublet with solitary, terminal flower heads and satint white, rose or pale lemon bracts.  To 60cm.  Grows on sandy mountain slopes.  Spring to summer flowering.  [RHSD, Rice].

Helichrysum species unidentified

Unidentified species.

Helichrysum species unidentified, pink flowers

Unidentified species of everlasting flower with pink flowers.

Helipterum gnaphaloides DC.

Half hardy sub-shrub with a many-branched stem, linear leaves, to 6cm long, and many daisy-like flowers with yellow florets.  To 50cm.  [RHSD].

Hesperis matronalis L.

Fully hardy rosette-forming biennial or short-lived perennial with racemes or panicles of white, lilac or purple flowers in late spring to mid-summer.  To 90cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].
