Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Cyathea australis (R.Br.) Domin

Tall tree fern, the trunk mostly covered by the persisten bases of the stipes, the fronds, to 3m long, with conical spines on the base of the stipes.  To 20m.  [FNSW, Beadle].

Cyathea cooperi (Hook. ex F.Muell.) Domin

Medium to tall treefern with narrow trunk patterned with ovate scars and fronds to 5m long.  To 12m.  [FNSW, Beadle].

Cyathea leichhardtiana (F.Muell.) Copel.

Medium tree fern with narrow trunk covered with prickly, persisten stipe bases, and fronds to 3m.  To 7m.  [FNSW, Beadle].

Cymbidium canaliculatum R.Br.

Frost-tender, very variable epiphytic orchid with pseudobulbous stems, rigid leaves, to 50cm long, and racemes, to 40cm long, with numerous, variable flowers, usually greenish-yellow with dark red spots, to solid maroon, in spring and summer.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Beadle].

Cymbidium suave R.Br.

Frost-hardy epiphytic orchid with non-pseudobulbous stem, to 30cm long, leaves to 40cm long, and arching racemes, to 45cm long, of numerous, small, fleshy, fragrant, yellowish-green flowers in spring or summer.  A very variable species.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Dendrobium aemulum R.Br.

Epiphytic orchid with short pseudobulbs, to 15cm long, 2-4 leaves, to 7cm long, at the apex of each pseudobulb, and racemes, to 10cm long, of many spidery, white to pink flowers in late winter to spring.  To 30cm.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Dendrobium cucumerinum Macleay ex Lindl.

Frost-tender epiphytic orchid with gherkin-shaped leaves attached to a creeping rhizome and short racemes of slightly perfumed, greenish white flowers, to 2.5cm long, with reddish purple streaks at the bottom of the segments and a 3-lobed lip, in spring.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Beadle].

Dendrobium kingianum Bidwill ex Lindl.

Frost-tender, evergreen, epiphytic or lithophytic orchid with narrow, conical, pseudobulbs, to 55cm long, with ovate leaves, to 10cm long, and racemes, to 15cm long, of fragrant, pink to deep mauve, occasionally white, flowers, to 4cm across, produced from the pseudobulb tips in spring.  [RHSE, Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Hortus].

Dendrobium linguiforme Sw.

Frost-tender lithophytic orchid with creeping stems, ovate leaves, to 3cm long, and racemes to 12cm long, bearing numerous white flowers, with faint purplish markings, in winter.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Dendrobium rex M.A.Clem. & D.L.Jones

See Dendrobium speciosum Sm. for more detail.   Dendrobium rex is the largest of the Dendrobium speciosum group with creamy yellow to bright yellow flowers and pseudobulbs to 1.8m long.  Grows on trees and rocks usually.  [Jones].

Dendrobium schoeninum Lindl.

Half-hardy lithophytic orchid with creeping rhizomes which can grow into large masses on rocks, leaves resembling succulent grass, and branching stems, to 90cm long, bearing 1 or 2 fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers, to 3cm across, with brown-purple stripes, in spring.  It is the southernmost species of dendrobe in Australia.  [Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Beadle].

Dendrobium species unidentified

An unidentified species but possibly a form of Dendrobium kingianum Bidwill ex Lindl. which see.  This is quite a variable species.

Dendrobium teretifolium R.Br.

Frost-tender epiphytic orchid with wiry, pendulous stems, often forming large masses, cylindrical, pendulous leaves, to 65cm long, and numerous racemes bearing up to 16, fragrant, spidery, white to cream flowers, with red or purple-marked lips, in late winter and spring.  [Also see Dendrobium teretifolium R.Br. variety].  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Beadle].

See Dendrobium teretifolium R.Br.for details.  At least two varieties are recognised in the wild, var. teretifolium, with white, cream or yellow flowers, and var. fairfaxii, with greenish flowers.
