Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Dendrobium tetragonum A.Cunn.

Frost-tender, variable epiphytic orchid with usually pendulous, quadrangular pseudobulbs, to 50cm long, each bearing up to 5, thin leathery leaves, and short racemes of up to nine spidery, greenish yellow flowers, with reddish markings, in spring.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Pridgeon, Hortus, Beadle].

Derwentia perfoliata (R.Br.) Raf.

Frost hardy, woody-based, evergreen perennial with arching stems, paired, ovate, toothed leaves, to 5cm long, and racemes of saucer-shaped blue flowers, to 1cm across, in late summer.  To 75cm.  [RHSE, FNSW, Hilliers’].

Diospyros cupulosa (F.Muell.) F.Muell.

Frost tender evergreen shrub with shiny, laurel-like leaves and solitary yellow flowers in summer, followed by plum-like berries.  To 1m.  [RHSD].

Diploglottis australis (G.Don) Radlkf.

Half hardy, medium-sized to large tree, its young leaves and branches covered with rusty down, with pinnate leaves, to 60cm or more long, composed of up to 12 elliptic leaves, to 30cm long, and large, panicles of many small flowers.  [RHSD, Hortus, FNSW, Beadle].

Dipodium punctatum (Sm.) R.Br.

Frost-tender, leafless, saprophytic, terrestrial orchid with reddish, usually spotted stems, to 90cm high, and terminal racemes of up to fifty, pink to dark mauve flowers, spotted white, in summer.  [RHSD, Jones, FNSW, Beadle].

Doryanthes excelsa Correa

Frost-tender perennial with erect clusters of 100 or more curving, lance-shaped leaves and, in late summer, flowering stems to 5m bearing short, lance shaped leaves and dense, spherical racemes, to 70cm across, of tubular red flowers enclosed in leafy bracts.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus, FNSW].

Doryphora sassafras Endl.

Large, aromatic tree with elliptic, coarsely serrated leaves, to 10cm long, and short axillary peduncles of, usually, three white flowers in early spring.  The timber of the Sassafras is of some commercial value.  [RHSD, FNSW, Beadle].

Epacris longiflora Cav.

Frost tender, erect or spreading, evergreen shrub with ovate, pointed leaves, to 1cm long, and pendant, cylindrical, white-tipped red flowers, produced singly from leaf axils or in terminal spikes to 4cm long, from spring to summer.  To 1.5m.  [RHSE, FNSW, Beadle].

Epacris purpurascens R.Br.

Stiffly erect shrub with ovate leaves and white flowers flushed with reddish-purple.  To 1.5m.  [RHSD, FNSW].

Erythrina numerosa A.R.Bean

A single specimen was sent to John Lindley at the London Horticultural Society, an accompanying letter dated 11th February 1848 describing it as ‘Erythrina sp. Dr. Leichhardt’s expedition, small tree bearing orange coloured blossoms.’  [MP A2933-1, p.157].

Erythrina vespertilio Benth.

Frost-tender, bushy, slender tree with 2-lobed leaves and very variable flowers, from orange to scarlet, in racemes to 30cm long, in spring.  To 13m.  [RHSD, FNSW, Blombery].

Eupomatia bennettii F.Muell.

Evergreen shrub with lance-shaped leaves to 12cm long, similar to Eupomatia laurina R.Br., which see, except that it only grows to about 1m in height.  [RHSD].

Frost tender, evergreen, erect shrub or small tree with alternate, glossy, elliptic leaves, to 12cm long, and solitary, axillary, greenish-yellow flowers, to 2.5cm across, followed by berry-like fruits, to 2cm across.  [RHSD, Beadle].

Ficus macrophylla Desf.

Frost tender, wide-spreading evergreen tree with aerial roots, some of which become props.  Oblong, leathery leaves are green above and paler beneath.  Figs are produced usually in pairs on mature trees in the open.  To 55m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Beadle].

Gleichenia microphylla R.Br.

Rhizomatous, creeping, clump-forming terrestrial fern with pinnate leaves with slightly recurved margins.  [RHSD, FNSW, Beadle].
