Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Plants in the Hortus

Many of the plants described here were listed in the catalogues of plants published by Sir William Macarthur in 1843, 1845, 1850 and 1857 and in an unpublished catalogue dated 1861. A large number of additional plants were identified from correspondence, gardening notebooks and other documents surviving in the archives. The Hortus attempts to describe all the plants grown in the gardens at Camden Park and those grown in horticultural enterprises such as orchards and vineyards and includes plants grown outside the gardens in the park-like environs of the Camden Park estate. The Hortus plants served a wide range of purposes in the 19th century household; as ornament, living fences, fibre, dyestuffs, medicines, food and drink from the garden, orchard and vineyard and many others.

Iris xiphium Desf. var. lusitanica (Ker-Gawl.) Franco

For a description of the type species see Iris xiphium Desf.  Lusitanica is no more than a colour form of the very variable Iris xiphium differing from the type by having almost entirely yellow falls, rather than blue with a central yellow mark.  

Iris xiphium L.

A vigorous, hardy, bulbous iris with lance-shaped leaves and pale to deep blue or violet, occasionally yellow or white, flowers in spring or summer.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].  

Isatis tinctoria L.

Fully hardy, tap-rooted, short-lived perennial or biennial with yellow flowers in early summer.  To 1.2m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Ismene amancaes (Ruiz & Pav.) Herb.

Bulbous perennial, the strap-like basal leaves fused at the base to form a false stem which produces a loose umbel of 2-6 scented, deep yellow flowers in summer.  To 30cm.  [RHSE, Baker Am.].  

Ismene narcissiflora (Jacq.) M.Roem.

The strap-like basal leaves sheath at the base to form a false stem, the flowering stems bearing umbels of up to 6 strongly scented white flowers, sometimes striped green.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus, Baker Am.].  

Isoloma pictum Planch.

Frost-tender rhizomatous perennial with hairy, ovate, toothed, opposite, dark velvety green leaves, to 7.5cm long, red-purple beneath, and hairy and long terminal racemes of velvety scarlet flowers, yellow beneath.  [RHSD].

Isoloma tubiflorum Decne.

Frost tender, perennial, shrubby gesneriad with hairy, ovate leaves, paler beneath, and small, tubular, yellow flowers, tinged with red.  [RHSD].

Ixia ‘Bijou’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Calypso’

Hybrid Ixia of unknown parentage but probably bred at Camden Park.  No description is extant.

Ixia Danae’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Diadem’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Dido’

Hybrid Ixia of unknown parentage.  Probably bred at Camden Park but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Euphrosgne’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Euridyce’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.

Ixia ‘Hebe’

Probably a Camden Park hybrid but no description is extant.
