Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Melia azedarach L. var. semperflorens

Now accepted as a form of Melia azedarach L.  For details see Melia azedarach L.  The variety semperflorens tends to retain its leaves under appropriate conditions but is not truly evergreen.

Melianthus major L.

Half hardy, tall, erect to spreading shrub with robust, hollow stems, spreading, pinnate leaves, to 50cm long, with 9-17 leaflets, and spike-like racemes, to 80cm long, of crimson to brick-red flowers, to 2.5cm long, in spring and summer.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Melianthus minor L.

Similar to Melianthus major L., which see, but less robust, downy rather than smooth, leaves to about 20cm, and red-black flowers in racemes to 40cm long.  To 2m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Mespilus germanica L.

Fully-hardy, spreading tree or large shrub with alternate, lance-shaped leaves, to 15cm long, and white, sometimes pink-tinged flowers, to 5cm across, in spring and summer, followed by edible, fleshy brown fruit, to 5cm or more across.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Metternichia princeps Miers

Frost tender, compact, evergreen, freely branching shrub with terminal and axillary racemes of campanulate white flowers with greenish tubes, in summer.  Usually to 1m in cultivation, to 8m in the wild.  [RHSD].

Michelia doltsopa Buch.-Ham. ex DC.

Tree with slender pointed leaves, to 25cm long, and strongly scented yellowish, green-tinged flowers.  To 25m but sometimes shrubby.  [RHSD, Hilliers’].

Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng.

Frost tender, rounded, bushy, freely-branching, evergreen shrub with lustrous, dark green, oval leaves, to 10cm long, and banana-scented, cup-shaped, yellowish-green to white flowers, to 3cm across, with dark red petal margins, in spring and summer. To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng. var. anonaefolia

For details of the species see Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng.  ‘It differs from fuscata in its leaves being narrower and the flowers more purple; the plant is also more delicate.  If these distinctions are not very strong, they may be deemed satisfactory in a genus composed of few individuals all of which are of a noble and interesting character.’  [LBC no.1072/1825].

Mimosa sensitiva L.

A frost-tender, prickly, semi-climbing, evergreen shrub with sensitive stems and leaves composed of 2 unequal pinnae, and purple flowers in summer.  Sensitive to touch.  To 2m.  [RHSD].

Mimulus aurantiacus Curt.

Frost hardy, erect, laxly branching shrub with toothed, lance-shaped, sticky leaves, and leafy racemes of open trumpet-shaped flowers of very variable colour, from yellow to orange or dark red, to 4.5cm long, with wavy petal margins, in summer and autumn.  To 1m.  [RHSE, Hilliers'].

 

Mimulus puniceus (Nutt.) Steud.

Frost hardy, erect-branched shrub with narrowly lance-shaped, toothed, sticky leaves and leafy racemes of funnel-shaped, brick-red to orange-red flowers, to 5cm long, from spring to summer.  To 1.5m.  [RHSE, Hilliers'].

 

Mirbelia speciosa Sieb. ex DC.

Half hardy, erect, bushy, evergreen shrub with narrow, linear leaves and axillarey or terminal spikes of reddish-purple, pea-like flowers in winter.  To 1m.  [RHSD, FNSW, Beadle].

Morus alba L.

Fully hardy, spreading tree with heart-shaped, sometimes lobed, leaves, to 20cm long, and ovoid, insipid-tasting white fruit, to 2.5cm long, ripening to pink or red, in late summer.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Morus alba L. var. multicaulis

For detail see Morus alba L.  Multicaulis, meaning many-stemmed, is a suckering shrub with much larger, coarsely toothed leaves to 35cm, and fruit nearly black when ripe. ‘Famous for its part in the historic attempts at silk-raising in North America.’  [Hortus Second].

Morus nigra L.

Fully hardy, rounded tree with ovate, sometimes lobed leaves, to 12cm long, and cylindrical, sweet fruit, to 3cm long, ripening to dark purple in summer.  To 12m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].
