Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Hedera colchica (K.Koch) Hibb.

Fully hardy, vigorous climber with ovate, unlobed, leathery leaves, to 12cm long. the largest-leaved of all ivy’s.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].  Varieties of colchica, particularly arborescens, will form rounded bushes or even trees.

Hedera helix L.

Fully hardy, vigorous, variable, self-clinging climber or trailing perennial with 3- to5-lobed, broadly triangular glossy leaves, to 6cm long.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Hedera helix L. var. hibernica

See Hedera helix L. for more information on the species.  Hibernica is one of many recognised varieties.  It is a fully hardy, vigorous climber with large, broadly triangular, dark green, glossy leaves, to 8cm long, with 5 triangular lobes.  The leaves are usually upward-folded.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Heliotropium arborescens ‘Triomphe de Liege’

See Heliotropium arborescens L. for details of the species.  ‘Triomphe de Liege’ was offered for sale by Mary Conway, of Earl’s Court nursery, Old Brompton, in the pages of The Gardeners Chronicle.  [Gard. Chron. 1850].  ‘Triomph de Leigh’ has immense heads of white flowers, and, grown in a sandy loam and vegeatable mould, blooms very freely.’  [FC p.131/1850].  It seems likely that ‘Leigh’ is a misspelling of ‘Liege’.

Heliotropium arborescens L.

Half hardy, bushy, short-lived shrub, often grown as an annual, leaves sometimes purple-tinged, with deep violet-blue or lavender-blue flowers in dense flower heads in summer.  To 1.2m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Heteromeles arbutifolia (Ait.) M.Roem.

Half-hardy evergreen shrub with thick and leathery, lance-shaped leaves, to 10cm long, and flattened, terminal panicles of white flowers in late summer, followed by small red berries.  To 4.5m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Heterophragma quadriloculare K.Schum.

Deciduous tree with brown bark, compound leaves, to 60cm long, crowded near the end of branches, each leaf with 3-5 pairs of leaflets, and a terminal leaflet, and terminal, velvety panicles of white flowers with a rosy tinge, to 6cm across, the five petals rounded with crinkled margins, followed by fruit to 30 cm long.  To 15m.  [www.flowersofindia.net].

Hibiscus heterophyllus-puniceus [Macarthur]

Hibiscus liliiflorus-rosa-sinensis [Bidwill]

A hybrid of Hibiscus liliiflorus Cav. x H. rosa-sinensis L.  ‘Sometimes the shape of the leaves is almost exactly as in H. Rosa-sinensis: at other times, and that very frequently, they are trifid, or tripartite, with the segments laciniated.  The flowers are deep red, buff-coloured, and more frequently of a bright and delicate rose colour.’  [BM t.2891/1829].  The figure is of the hybrid Hibiscus liliiflorus x H. rosa-sinensis shown in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, but to what extent it resembles Bidwill’s hybrid is impossible to say.

Hibiscus moscheutos Welw. ex Hiern. subsp. palustris (L.) R.T.Clausen

Half-hardy, strong-growing, woody-based perennial with mostly ovate to rounded, sometimes 3- to 5-lobed leaves, white-hairy beneath, and widely funnel-shaped, white, pink or crimson flowers, rarely white, to 20cm across, with spreading petals, in summer.  To 2.5m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Hibiscus mutabilis L. var. florepleno

See Hibiscus mutabilis L. for information on the species.   Florepleno is the double-flowered form.

Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.

Frost-tender, rounded, bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree with broadly lance-shaped leaves with toothed margins, to 15cm long, and solitary, 5-petalled, bright crimson flowers, to 10cm across, borne singly from the leaf axils in summer and autumn.  Hibiscus rosa-sinensis simplex is a single-flowered variety, possibly close to the wild crimson form.  To 3m.  Many single and double-flowered cultivars exist in shades of crimson, orange, yellow or white.  [RHSE, Hortus].
