Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Climbers

The ability to climb and scramble over the ground or other plants is the only characteristic shared by plants in this category.

Passiflora x buonapartea Baxt.

A Passiflora alata x P. quadrangularis hybrid with fragrant, red-crimson flowers with red, white and blue corona.  [RHSD].

Passiflora x caerulea-racemosa Sabine

Frost-tender, variable, vigorous climber with slender stems, 3-5-lobed leaves, to 15cm long, and bowl-shaped, red-purple flowers, to 13cm wide, with spreading corona filaments, purple-black at the base, white above, in summer and autumn, followed by ovoid green fruit. To 6m or more.  [RHSE, Hilliers’].

Passiflora x loudoni Loud.

Frost-tender climber with purple flowers ‘much [of the] habit of [Passiflora kermesina], but the leaves are larger, and are not coloured with purple beneath, like P. kermesina.  It also requires a warm stove and a very moist temperature.’  [MB p.153/1847].  

Periploca graeca L.

Frost hardy, twining, deciduous climber with glossy ovate leaves, to 10cm long, and long-stalked corymbs of up to 12 star-shaped, unpleasantly scented flowers, to 2.5cm across, greenish-yellow outside, and purplish inside, in summer, followed by slender seed pods, to 12cm long, which release silky-tufted seeds.  To 9m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Petrea arborea H.B. & K.

Sometimes vine-like shrub or small tree with elliptic leaves, to 15cm long, and axillary racemes of blue flowers.  To 9m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Petrea volubilis L.

Frost tender, woody-stemmed, semi-evergreen climber with branching, twining stems, elliptic leaves, to 20cm long, and panicles, to 35cm long, of small, salverform, violet flowers with lilac calyx lobes, from late winter to summer.  To 12m.  [RHSE].  

Physianthus elata unidentified

An unidentified Physianthus or Arauja species, twining or climbing perennials.  Physianthus is now generally included with Araujia and Physianthus tricolor may be another Araujia species.  See Araujia albens (Mart.) D.Don for further discussion.

Physostelma wallichii Wight

Frost tender climbing shrub with opposite, leathery, oblong, pointed leaves, and cyme-like umbels of somewhat bell-shaped, green and yellow flowers in spring.  [RHSD].

Piper nigrum L.

Trailing or climbing shrub with ovate, pointed leaves, to 15cm long and spikes of minute flowers followed by green fruit, ripening through red to black.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Plowmania nyctaginoides (Standl.) Hunz. & Subsils

Fully hardy, fast-growing evergreen climber with 4-angled stems, pinnate leaves, to 7cm long, and racemes of tubular orange flowers, to 2.5cm long, from spring to autumn.  To 5m or more.  [RHSE].

Plumbago capensis Thunb.

Half hardy, scandent evergreen shrub, sometimes grown as a climber, with slender branching stems, oblong leaves, to 7cm long, and dense, terminal, corymb-like racemes of long-tubed, sky-blue flowers, to 4cm long, in summer and autumn.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Plumbago capensis Thunb. var. alba

For a description of the species see Plumbago capensis Thunb.  Alba is a form with white flowers.  

Prestonia venosa G.Nicholson

Frost-tender, climbing or twining woody vine with oval, opposite leaves, to 15cm, and clusters of up to 20, red-veined yellow-green flowers in summer.  [RHSD].

Pyrostegia venusta Miers

Frost tender, vigorous climber with numerous slender stems and opposite leaves composed of lance-shaped leaflets to 8cm long.  Terminal clusters of curved, tubular, waxy, golden to reddish-orange flowers are borne in profusion, mainly in winter.  To 10m or more.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Quisqualis indica L.

Frost tender, perennial climber, shrub-like when young, with sharply pointed, elliptic leaves, to 18cm long, and pendant terminal racemes of fragrant, slender-tubed flowers, to 7cm long, white on opening, then changing to pink, then purplish red with age, in summer and autumn.  To 20m or more.  [RHSE, Hortus].
