Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Trees and Shrubs

A division of the Camden Park catalogues that is not clearly defined. In broad terms it includes all plants with woody stems except conifers and fruit trees and shrubs.

Laurus species unidentified

Laurus or related species, unidentified. 

Lavandula spica Cav.

Hardy sub-shrub with pale grey, downy leaves and terminal spikes of fragrant, tubular, pale grey-blue flowers.  To 1.2m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Lavandula stoechas L.

Fully hardy, compact, bushy shrub with linear, grey-green leaves and dense spikes of fragrant, dark purple flowers, to 3cm long, topped with conspicuous purple bracts on short stalks, in spring and summer.  To 60cm  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Lawsonia inermis L.

Frost tender, large evergreen shrub or small tree, sometimes spiny, with lance-shaped leaves, to 5cm long, and pyramidal panicles, to 40cm long, of many tiny, fragrant, white, pink or red flowers, in summer.  To 6m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Leptospermum flavescens Sm. var. grandiflorum (Lodd.) Benth.

Frost-hardy upright shrub with white-hairy stems, ovate, grey-green leaves, to 1.5cm long, and solitary, saucer-shaped, white, or rarely pink, flowers, to 2cm across, in summer. To 4m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Leucadendron argenteum R.Br.

Short-lived dioecious tree with lance-shaped leaves, densely covered with silky hairs and terminal heads of small flowers surrounded by prominent bracts.  To 9m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit

Frost-tender, spineless shrub with leaves composed of up 6 or more pairs of pinnae, each composed 15 or more pairs of leaflets, and yellow-tinged white flowers in summer.  To 3m.  [RHSD].

Leycesteria formosa Wall.

Fully hardy, upright, thicket-forming shrub with bamboo-like first-year shoots, ovate, pointed leaves to 17cm long, and axillary or terminal, pendant spikes, to 10cm long, of white flowers among dark purple-red bracts, in summer and autumn, followed by red-purple berries.  To 2m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Ligustrum japonicum Thunb.

Fully-hardy, upright, dense, evergreen shrub, with ovate, glossy leaves, to10cm long, and panicles, to 15cm long, of white flowers, in summer and autumn, followed by black fruit.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hortus, FNSW, Hilliers’].

Ligustrum lucidum Ait.

Fully-hardy, conical, evergreen tree or shrub with ovate, tapered, glossy leaves, to 15cm long, and panicles, to 20cm long, of white flowers in summer and autumn, followed by blue-black fruit.  An excellent ornamental hedging species.  To 10m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’, Beadle].

Ligustrum vulgare L.

Fully-hardy, bushy, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub with lance-shaped leaves, to 6cm long, and panicles, to 5cm long, of white flowers in summer, followed by black fruit.  To 3m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Liquidambar styraciflua L.

Fully hardy, broadly conical, deciduous tree, with palmate, 5-7 lobed, glossy leaves, to 15cm across, which turn orange, red and purple in autumn.  To 25m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Liriodendron tulipifera L.

Large deciduous tree with alternate, three-lobed leaves and large, solitary, very fragranr green, yellow and orange flowers in summer.  To 30m.  [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Lithocarpus elegans (Blume) Hatus. ex Soepadmo

Somewhat variable evergreen tree with shiny, glabrous leaves with entire leaf margins, the male flowers being held in erect spikes.  To 25m.  It provides valuable timber.

Livistona australis (R.Br.) Mart.

Large palm with an erect, robust trunk and long, spiny leaf stalks supporting longer, fan-like leaves.  From spring to summer long panicles of cream flowers are produced, followed by brownish red to black fruit.  To 25m.  [RHSE, Hortus, FNSW, Beadle].
