Quercus robur L. var. fastigiata
See Quercus robur L. for a description of the species. Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ is a large, imposing tree of columnar habit with upright branches and tapering leaves. [RHSD, Hortus, Hilliers’].
Horticultural & Botanical History
It was introduced to Britain from Southern Europe in 1820. [Hilliers’]. Saint-Hilaire Arb. pl.16/1824.
History at Camden Park
Listed in all published catalogues [T.800/1843].
Notes
As Quercus robur L. fastigiata is somewhat at odds with the description ‘Willow-leaved oak’, Macarthur’s tree may be Quercus robur L. ‘Salicifolia’, (‘Halophylla’), a slow growing oak with elliptic, willow-like leaves. Johnson’s Dictionary gives Quercus fastigiata as a synonym for Quercus pedunculata fastigiata, which is consistent with Q. robur ‘Fastigiata’.
