Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Mimulus alatus Ait.

Fully hardy, stoloniferous, herbaceous perennial with ovate to lance-shaped leaves, to 15cm long, and light blue or violet flowers.  To 60cm.  [RHSD, Hortus, Don].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘A native of North America, in moist ground: it flowers freely with us in the latter part of the summer, and was introduced in the year 1803. […] Though not particularly showy, it still possesses its beauties, nor can it fail to interest the thinking mind.’  [LBC no.410/1820].  Possibly introduced to Britain as early as 1783.  [JD].

History at Camden Park

Probably short lived in the gardens as it is listed only in the 1845 catalogue.
