Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Ficus carica ‘Black Ischia’

A cultivar of Ficus carica L. Medium sized, turbinate, flat at the top. Skin deep purple, almost black when ripe. Flesh deep red, sweet, and luscious. Tree hardy, and an excellent bearer; succeeds well in pots. August. [Hogg – Fruit Manual p.73/1860].

 

 

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘This is a very productive fig; but the birds are great devourers of it, if the fruit is not protected.’ [George Lindley – Orchard Guide p.162/1831]. I have no information on its history. Figured in Pomona Brittanica PB pl.75/1812.

6 figs are illustrated, all pear-shaped, the skin colour varying from green to purple. Pomona Britannica pl.75, 1812.
