Chamaerops humilis L.
Half hardy, bushy palm producing suckers when mature, with broad, pinnate, bluish leaves to 100cm long, composed of up to 15 linear leaflets, and yellow flowers in dense, almost hidden panicles in spring and summer. To 3m. [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].
Horticultural & Botanical History
‘According to Willdenow there are two varieties of this plant: one almost without any stem, the other with a stem 20 feet high.’ The variety major is presumably the latter. [BM t.2152/1820]. Introduced to Britain in 1731. [PD]. ABR pl.599/1810.
