Horticultural & Botanical History
‘C. pubescens, received from China (in 1844) as a double flower, has become single with Mr. Beaton.’ [Cottage Gardener, iv. 302. as reported in JD]. In 1846 The Gardeners Chronicle described flore pleno, with flowers ‘the size of a double anemone’, pale pink, and remaining open for several days. In 1857 this journal gave a further description: ‘The flowers are about as large as a double anemone, but the petals are arranged with the regularity of the rose, and of a pale, very delicate pink’. ‘Raised from a small portion of the root found in a dead Paeony root, in box no.22, from Mr. Fortune’s mission in China.’ [BR f.42/1846]. OFG f.55/1853. MB p.243/1846.
