Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Verbena x hybrida Robinson’s ‘Defiance’

A cultivar of Verbena x hybrida Hort. ex Vilm., the Florists’ Verbena.  ‘Of scarlets, decidedly the best yet is Robinson’s Defiance, a most splendid variety; already too well known to need describing.’  [Gard. Chron. 1848].

History at Camden Park

Plants sent from Veitch’s Nursery of Exeter to John Bidwill at Camden Park in 1849 included seven named Verbenas of which this plant is one.  These were almost certainly among the many varieties listed in the Addendum of the 1850 catalogue.  [A.63/1850].
