Half-hardy, tuberous-rooted, perennial climber with very slender stems and spurred, vermilion, purple and yellow flowers from winter to summer. To 2m. [RHSE, Hortus].

‘This beautiful species flowered in the greenhouse of the Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, in March, 1832.’ [BM t.3169/1832]. ‘Than this, few plants possess more real interest; and it is as useful as it is interesting, for it continues to flower the whole season through.’ [Gardeners Chronicle’, 1855].
