Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Sinningia speciosa ‘Wortleyana’

Presumably a cultivar of Sinningia speciosa (Lodd.) Hiern but I have found no description.

Horticultural & Botanical History

Gloxinia ‘Wortleyana’ was offered for sale by Bass and Brown in 1851 [Gard. Chron. 1851].  No description is given.  Not listed under this name in the main Gesneriad Register – Sinningia but ‘Wortleyana’, 1849, synonym ‘Worthleyana’, is listed in the Appendix with no details.

History at Camden Park

Gloxinia Wortleyana was requested of James Backhouse on 1st February, 1849 and this is the likely source [MP A2933-1, p.183].  First recorded in a handwritten entry in a copy of the 1850 catalogue held at Camden Park [CPA] where it is spelt Wortleyana or possibly Mortleyana and also in a copy of the 1850 catalogue held at the Mitchell Library and inscribed on the front Wm. Macarthur 23rd. Dec. 1854 [ML 635.9m].  Certainly grown in the gardens at this time.
