Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Fully hardy, erect annual with greenish, magenta or pink flowers in dense cylindrical spikes in summer.  [Hortus].

Ancient garden plant.  The varieties genuinum and elatum are figured in English Botany.  [English Botany pl.MCCXXXVII and pl. MCCXXXVIII].  ‘Habitat.  Waste and cultivated grounds, dunghills, and wet places; frequent.  Annual; flowering from July to September.’  [Deakin - Florigraphia Brittanica p.572/1857].  Saint-Hilaire pl.484/1832.
