Peperomia species unidentified
Peperomia are semi-succulent herbs with usually opposite or whorled leaves and a terminal or axillary spikes of crowded, small flowers. [FNSW].
Horticultural & Botanical History
Two species of Peperomia are found in the Sydney/Illawarra region, Peperomia leptostachya Hook. & Arn. and Peperomia tetraphylla (Forst.f.) Hook. & Arn. Both species are epiphytic, Peperomia leptostachya on rocks and Peperomia tetraphylla on rocks or tree trunks. Both are found in the Illawarra region. [FNSW, Beadle]. For synonomy see the Australian Plant Names Index at www.anbg.gov.au/cgi-bin/apni. There is insufficient information to determine which of these species was grown by Macarthur.
History at Camden Park
Macarthur sent a plant of a Peperomia species, described as epiphytic and almost certainly either leptostachya or tetraphylla, to Loddiges’ nursery in 1846. [MP A2933-1. P.147].
