Lilium praecox Lodd. ex Steud.
Allen describes Lilium praecox as ‘a strong grower with pure white petals, slightly tinged with pink. Twelve to fifteen flowers per stem.’ [Allen]. I have been unable to find a more detailed description or make an accurate identification of this plant.
Horticultural & Botanical History
Lilium praecox Lodd. is listed in Steudel’s Nomenclator botanicus, seu, Synonymia plantarum universalis, part 2, page 44/1841. Steudel probably obtained his information from Loddiges’ Nursery catalogues. No additional data.
History at Camden Park
Listed in the 1843, 1845 and 1850 catalogues. Lilium praecox is listed in both the 1830 and 1836 editions of Loddiges’ Nursery catalogue, copies of which are held at Camden Park [CPA]. However, it is marked not marked with a ‘c’ in the 1836 edition, indicating grown at Camden.
Notes
Another possibility is Lilium speciosum Thunb. var. praecox, probably an early flowering form for which I have no further data. See the specific entry for a description of Lilium speciosum.
‘Praecox’ means precocious, developing early, bearing flowers before the leaves. [Stearn].
