Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Calceolaria bicolor Ruiz. & Pav.

Half-hardy sub-shrub, often grown as a biennial, with ovate, serrated leaves, to 8cm long, and many-flowered inflorescences bearing small, lime-green flowers with an unspotted corona, light yellow upper lip and deeper sulphur-yellow lower lip, shading to white, in summer.  To 2m.  [RHSD, Don].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘Ruiz and Pavon state this species of Calceolaria to be a native of rocky places in Canta. […] It is an extremely pretty addition to the already cultivated species, (now fifteen in all, exclusive of the hybrids, and of the narrow-leaved variety of C. integrifolia) resembling in colour the pleasing, subdued tint of C. scabiosaefolia.  [BM t.3036/1830].  ‘A native of Peru, from whence it was sent, in 1829, to Mr. M’Nab, of the Edinburgh garden, who communicated it to us.  It is a soft shrubby kind, growing to two feet in height, and producing its pleasing flowers during most of the summer.’  [LBC no.1783/1833].  BR f.1374/1830.  MB p.246/1834.

History at Camden Park

Listed in all published catalogues [H.35/1843].  Calceolaria bicolor was ticked in a copy of the Horticultural Register, September 1831.  Although this originally belonged to James Bowman, it is likely that it was grown by Macarthur much earlier than 1843.  Plants were sent to J. Abbott of Hobart on 6th August 1846.  [MP A2933-2, p.181].
