Ribes grossularia ‘Green Walnut’
A cultivar of Ribes grossularia L. ‘Green Walnut’ is probably very similar to Macarthur’s ‘large, smooth, green’ gooseberry. ‘Fruit medium sized, obovate. Skin very thin, dark green, and smooth. An early variety, of excellent flavour. Bush with long-spreading shoots; leaves close to the branches; and a great bearer.’ [Hogg – Fruit Manual p.83/1860]. Hogg includes it among his smooth, oblong, oval or obovate, green dessert gooseberries.
Horticultural & Botanical History
The Show Gooseberry Hill's ‘Sir Peter Teazle’ is used as illustration. It is probably very similar in appearance to Macarthur’s ‘large, smooth, green’ and ‘Green Walnut’ [PB pl.6/1812].
History at Camden Park
This gooseberry was requested from George Stevenson, nurseryman of South Australia, in 1844 and probably obtained from him [MP A2933-1, p.21/1844]. Macarthur may have been describing the fruit rather than providing a specific name when calling this gooseberry ‘large, smooth, green’.
