Sometimes vine-like shrub or small tree with elliptic leaves, to 15cm long, and axillary racemes of blue flowers.  To 9m.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘A native of Trinidad, for which we were indebted to the kindness of the late Sir. R. Woodford.  It is a shrub of moderate size, flowering freely in the spring, and possessing great beauty.’  [LBC no.1606/1830].  Introduced to Britain in 1823.  [JD].
