Hebe x andersoni (Lindl. & Paxt.) Ckn.

A hybrid, Hebe salicifolia (Forst.f.) Pennell x Hebe speciosa R.Cunn.  A vigorous half hardy shrub with leaves to 10cm long, and long racemes of soft-pink to lavendar-blue flowers, fading to white, in summer and autumn.  To 1.8m.  [RHSE, Hilliers’].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘This beautiful Veronica is well worthy of all that has been said of it.  By the first week of August it had become a handsome specimen, three feet in height, with branches regularly developed from the pot upwards. I know of no autumn-flowering plant that possesses so many recommendations as this, and it is of such easy culture that any one may grow it.’  [Gard. Chron. 1852].  Bred by Anderson of Murrayfield, Edinburgh, c.1845.  [PFG pl.54/1853].  FS f.658/1851.
