Gymnosporia species Port Stephens

Unidentified species of Gymnosporia or a related genus. Gymnosporia Benth. & Hook.f. is a genus of tropical and subtropical shrubs and trees of the family Celastraceae, often spiny and mainly from Africa.

Horticultural & Botanical History

Australian natives now generally referred to other genera of Celastraceae, particularly Celastrus and Maytenus, have been referred to Gymnosporia in the past, but there is insufficient information to correctly identify this plant.

History at Camden Park

Hand-written in an 1850 catalogue in the Mitchell Library collection, inscribed on the front Wm. Macarthur, 23rd. Dec. 1854.  [ML 635.9m]. Certainly grown by Macarthur, probably collected by or with Captain P. P. King or Edward Bowman.
