Euphorbia fulgens Karw. ex Klotzsch

Frost tender, erect, open, deciduous shrub with slender stems that arch at the tips, lance-shaped leaves, to 10cm long, and decorative axillary cymes of flower-like scarlet bracts and reduced floral parts in winter.  To 1.2m.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘This beautiful and rare species of Euphorbia has not, to our knowledge, been before published in any periodical in this country. […] It appears to us sufficiently distinguishable from all the species hitherto described by the striking difference in the colour of the leaves; those of the lower part of the branches being dark green, while those which terminate the shoots are shaded with pink, or a bluish colour, or mottled with a faint blue upon a purplish ground. […] To convey a better idea of its appearance when in full blossom we have only to add that in general it greatly surpasses the well known E. splendens, even when in its highest perfection.’  [MB p.31/1837].   First introduced to Germany by Baron von Karwinsky and thence to the Glasgow Botanic Garden by Rauch in 1835.  [Fl.Ca. p.35/1839].  FC p.145/1838.  BM t.3673/1838.
