Berberis macrophylla Hort. Ex Lindl.

A hairless shrub with lance-shaped leaves and fascilcles of 12 or more yellow flowers.  To 3m or more.  [BM t.9283/1935].

Horticultural & Botanical History

Johnson’s Dictionary describes Berberis macrophylla as a species from Japan, introduced in 1847.  This is probably the plant published as Berberis macrophylla Hort. ex Lindl. in the Journal of the Horticultural Society of London, vol.4. 1850.  It was figured in BM t.9283/1935, as Berberis xanthoxylon, with the synonyms B. wallichiana var. xanthoxylon and B. japonica Miq.

Figured is a spiny stem, toothed leaves and axillary racemes of bright yellow flowers. Curtis's Botanical Magazine t.9283, 1935.
