A family of some 17 genera and 814 species of usually perennial or annual herbs, often with a bulbous rhizome, occasionally shrubby. Widespread in Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia. Often included in the Liliaceae. [FNSW]. Represented in the Hortus by 2 European species.
