Verbena phlogiflora Chan.

Half-hardy, erect or spreading, branching perennial with lance-shaped leaves and terminal spikes of purple, lilac, red or blue flowers in summer.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Horticultural & Botanical History

Verbena tweediana was raised in the Dublin Botanic Gardens by Mr. Niven from seed sent by Tweedie in 1836.  [MB p.5/1837].  It was also raised at Glasgow by Murray from seeds from the same source.  This particular plant was described as tall and upright growing.  [BM t.3541/1836].
