Pinus halepensis Mill.

Frost-hardy, evergreen conical tree, becoming rounded with age, with scaly, reddish bark, slender, sparse leaves, to 11cm long, borne in pairs, and narrow, ovoid, red-brown female cones, to 12cm long.  To 20m.  [RHSE, Hortus, Hilliers’].

Horticultural & Botanical History

Introduced to Britain in 1683.  [JD].  Leaves, cones and seeds of Pinus halepensis are figured in Die Coniferen.  [Die Coniferen t.I/1840-41].

History at Camden Park

Listed in all published catalogues [C.61/1843].  Pinus maritima was included among desiderata in a letter to John Lindley dated 15th February 1848 but was not marked ‘arrived’ on Macarthur’s copy.  [MP A2933-1, p.157].  But see also Pinus pinaster Ait.
