Erect, hardy perennial with ovate to oblong leaves and deep scarlet flowers.  To 90cm.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘A native of St. Felipe, in Texas: discovered by Mr. Drummond, in 1834, and by him sent to our gardens [Glasgow, in 1835], where it proves to be a very great acquisition, being remarkable for its stately growth, its singularly glaucous and large foliage, and for the number and size and rich colouring of the flowers.’  Named for the curator of the Glasgow Botanic Garden.  [BM t.3472/1836].

History at Camden Park

Seeds ordered from Hurst and McMullen, Seedsmen and Florists of London, on 8th April 1846.  [MP A2933-1 p.132].  This is the only record.
