Narcissus tazetta ‘Soleil d’Or’

An old tazettiform narcissus with stems bearing many scented, gold and tangerine-orange flowers in spring.  To 45cm.  ‘Grand Soleil d’Or’ is a more recently introduced, improved variety.  [RHSE].

Horticultural & Botanical History

Curtis's Botanical Magazine figures as Narcissus tazetta, a plant very similar if not identical to ‘Soleil d’Or’.  [BM t.925/1806].  The illustration used here is taken from a water colour painting from ‘Ellensville’, NSW.  The painting was executed about 1840.  Reproduced courtesy of Pacita Alexander.

History at Camden Park

Listed only in an Addendum to the 1857 catalogue [A.65/1857].  ‘Soleil d’Or’ is very commonly grown in Australia today and is still present in the Camden Park gardens.  

Notes

‘Soleil d’Or’ should probably be classified in the Narcissus tazetta subspecies aureus.
