Fully hardy rosette-forming biennial or short-lived perennial with racemes or panicles of white, lilac or purple flowers in late spring to mid-summer.  To 90cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].

Paxton’s and Johnson’s Dictionary list eight varieties of H. matronalis and Don nine, with single and double flowers, and with white, purple, lilac or green flowers, or variegated white and purple.  [JD].  An ancient garden plant, planted in England by John Gerard before 1596.
