Alocasia odora K.Koch

Tender, tuberous-rooted herbaceous plant with ovate leaves, to 90cm long and 75 cm wide on stems to 60cm long, and fragrant, yellowish, spathate flowers.  [RHSD, Hortus].

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘From Pegu this most stately species of Arum, Caladium of Ventenat, was sent by the Rev. Mr. Felix Carey, to the Botanic Garden of Calcutta, where it thrives luxuriantly, and blossoms from the close of the rains till January, ripening its seeds in March and April.  the flowers possess a considerable degree of frangrance which to most people is agreeable, a rare quality in the flowers of an Indian Arum.’  [Fl.Ind. iii p.499].

Arum odorum was marked with a ‘c’, indicating grown at Camden, in an 1836 Loddiges’ catalogue held at Camden Park [CPA].  Certainly grown in the gardens.
