Achimenes ‘Sir Trecherne Thomas’

‘Sir Trecherne Thomas’ is a crimson-flowered hybrid of Achimenes ‘Boekmanni’ x Achimenes grandiflora bred by Louis van Houtte.  Achimenes ‘Boekmanni’ is itself a cross between A. longiflora and A. grandiflora.  [GRA p.37].

Horticultural & Botanical History

The Floricultural Cabinet described the flowers of ‘Sir Trehorn Thomas’ as very large, of a brilliant carmine-red colour, and exceedingly showy.  ‘Sir Trecherne Thomas’ was listed by Edward George Henderson and Son, St Johns Wood, in The Gardeners' Chronicle: ‘A large rich coloured flower, fimbriated (some will say it is carmine, others a crimson or rosy purple; we do not, however, know ourselves what colour to call it, but it is the best Achimenes we possess); habit excellent, robust, and dwarf, a free, abundant flowerer, and one that will supersede a dozen other varieties that have hitherto been cultivated.’  [FC p.198/1853, Gard. Chron. 1854].  ‘Sir Trecherne Thomas’ is still available and suggested as a good variety for a small collection.  [www.aboutflowers.org].
