Achimenes ‘Dr. Hopf’
A hybrid between Achimenes ‘Count Wolfarth’ and Achimenes longiflora ‘Alba’, it has pure white flowers, with a yellow throat, streaked crimson. [IH p.55 Vol 2/1855].
Horticultural & Botanical History
An advertisement in The Gardeners’ Chronicle informed us that ‘A. Verschaffelt, Nurseryman. Ghent, is now sending out his following new plants: [including] Dr. Hopf.’ [Gard. Chron. 1855]. The illustration in Illustration Horticole shows that it is very similar to the cultivar ‘Ambroise Verschaffelt’ but with less distinct markings and a rosy throat. The latter, of similar vintage (1855), is still available today. [GRA p.16].
History at Camden Park
Listed only as an addendum to the 1857 catalogue [A.16/1857]. ‘Ambroise Verschaffelt’ is grown at Camden Park.
