Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Hosta plantaginea Aschers.

Fully-hardy clump-forming perennial with heart-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped, long-tubed, very fragrant white flowers in summer and autumn.  To 60cm.  [RHSE, Hortus].  

Horticultural & Botanical History

‘[Hemerocallis japonica is] Hardy; blooms much later in the year than caerulea, and not so freely. […] Introduced in 1790 by Mr. G. Hibbert.  Our drawing was made form a plant that flowered in the open ground at Mr. Vere’s.’  [BM t.1433/1812]. Redouté-L pl.3/1802-1815.

Notes

Some authorities give Hemerocallis japonica Thunb. as a synonym of Hosta sieboldii (Pax.) J.Ingram which see, or Hosta lancifolia Tratt which see, but they are retained separately here.
