Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Dianthus species unidentified [3]

Unidentified species.  It seems likely that these were varieties of carnation or pink.  See Dianthus caryophyllus L. and cultivar descriptions.

History at Camden Park

Macarthur placed an order for eight varieties of Dianthus seed with James Carter, Florist and Seedsman of High Holborn, on 8th of April 1846 [MP A2933-1, p.128].  Species or varieties are not specified in the order or in The Gardeners Chronicle advertisement on which it was based.
