Notice

Colin Mills, compiler of the Hortus Camdenensis, died in late November 2012 after a short illness. As he always considered the Hortus his legacy, it is his family's intention to keep the site running in perpetuity. It will not, however, be updated in the near future.

Brunfelsia calycina Benth. var. pohliana

See Brunfelsia calycina Benth. var. confertiflora.  Pohliana does not seem to differ materially from other forms of Brunfelsia calycina.

Horticultural & Botanical History

Franciscea pohliana is figured in the Floricultural Cabinet from a plant growing at Loddiges’ Nursery. [FC p.146/1845].  ‘A handsome Brazilian shrub, native of Brazil, presented by Mr. Lowe of Clapton to the Royal Gardens of Kew, where it flowers in the stove during the months of June and July.  It was received under the name of F. Pohliana, probably a mere garden name, which ought not to be retained, for it is assuredly the F. acuminata of Pohl.’  [BM t.4189/1845].

History at Camden Park

Listed in the 1850 and 1857 catalogues [T.457/1850].  Obtained from Loddiges’ Nursery, brought out from England by Captain P. P. King in 1849.  [ML A1980-3].
