A family of rhizomatous perennial herbs of some 20 genera and up to 500 species from southern Africa, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and neighbouring islands. The roots are tuberous, fleshy or fibrous, the leaves forming a basal rosette with an erect, largely leafless scape bearing a terminal inflorescence. [FNSW]. In some systems included in Liliaceae.
